Functional Neurology
Functional neurology is a rehabilitation-based approach focused on how the different parts of your nervous system function and communicate with one another. Rather than focusing only on a diagnosis or symptom, we evaluate areas such as balance, coordination, eye movements, sensory processing, gait, motor control, and other aspects of neurological performance. At Southwest Brain Performance Centers, we use individualized neurological and physical assessments, cognitive and physical activities, and targeted therapies to identify areas of weakness and help your nervous system function more effectively. We specialize in supporting recovery from acquired brain injuries, including concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and strokes, as well as vestibular disorders, dysautonomia and POTS, and neurological challenges associated with mold toxicity and Lyme disease. We also help individuals experiencing nervous system dysregulation by gradually improving activity tolerance and building function.
Unlike traditional medical neurology, our focus is on evaluating nervous system function and using targeted rehabilitation to improve it. We do not prescribe medications or perform in-office CT or MRI imaging; instead, treatment may include eye exercises, gaze stabilization, visual-motor activities, coordinated movements, tactile therapies, gait training, photobiomodulation, neuromodulation, and chiropractic care. When medical evaluation, imaging, medication, or other services are needed, we work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers. Our goal is to look beyond your symptoms, help you better understand how your nervous system may be contributing to your challenges, and provide personalized tools and strategies to improve function and support long-term health.
